The Tower of Babel

65”x49” oil on canvas/wood 2001

The story of the Tower of Babel is found in Genesis immediately after the description of the flood. It begins by listing Noah’s descendants who became the nations of the world, and ….“The whole earth was of one language and of common purpose”.

In this new beginning, the people said to one another:

“… Come, let us build us a city and a tower with its top in the heaven, and let us make a name for ourselves…”.

The commentaries tell us that Nimrod - the first king of the generation after the flood - was the sinister force who planned the tower to reach to Heaven and from it, to wage war against God!

God then confused their language until it became impossible to work together, and in the ensuing chaos, the foundation crumbled and was swallowed by the earth, and the nations were dispersed throughout the world.
